Bombay Top

So I'm ready to make a new top for the Bombay dresser. We decided to replace the existing top (just fiberboard) with a thick cedar slab. I Love the live edge woodworking trend and knew that this would give the piece a real wow factor.

I couldn't get a slab that was actually wide enough for this top, so I glued two pieces together and hid the seam as best I could.

The first attempt wasn't great, I used poly for a sealant, which normally wouldn't be an issue. But, I didn't get all the glue sanded out and it turned some areas gray.

After sanding the poly back to bare wood, I cut it to the final shape and routed the edges.

I finished the wood with teak oil to protect it from water damage.

The next step is to paint the dresser and attach the new top! I'll also be attaching some wood strips to the inside of the dresser to make sure the new top is solidly attached. Once the sink and faucet come, I’ll be installing those - which means cutting through the new top :(.

I'm really happy with how it turned out! It's such a unique piece now. I hope you enjoy seeing the process as much as I enjoyed doing it. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below or contact me directly. Thanks for reading!
